In this thesis, talked about that in the first half of 20th century how black and white woodcut developed in Germany and how impacted Chinese woodcut. Chinese modern woodcut began in the 20th century,30s. Before this the woodcut were just duplicates, has not manifested woodcut's charm truly. This period is an important period that learned from foreign woodcuts a lot and developed its own distinctive. At this time, the sharp social criticism Germany black and white woodcut has shown is in line with the needs of Chinese society at that time as well as wood development. Black and white woodcut of the period of the German original, in general, have a keen power of attention to human suffering, passionate and strong expression. Introduced by Lu Xun, the Germany black and white woodcut came into China, and affected the styles of black and white woodcut in China greatly. Which strongest influenced is Kaethe Kollwitz. Kollwitz suffered of its own so that the works had a particularly feelings of anger, and a kind of fighting spirit. So the works can arouse Chinese's sympathy especially. Her works are full of love of the loving mother to show loving care for the compatriot, also like dagger sharply stabbing pain enemy. So her works most adapted China's social condition at that time. Chinese artists deeply influenced by her. The Chinese initial period modern black and white woodcut works much influenced by Kollwitz. China's artists are not fully acceptable to the Kollwitz and other German expressionist artist's black and white woodcut, but the choice was absorbed, and slowly integrated into the Chinese characteristics of the element. China's emerging woodcut had enriched the German black and white woodcut techniques; delayed its linguistic form, land the German black and white woodcut in China got a new life, created the new road of Chinese modern woodcut.
