The term public art is literally translated from English. In broad sense, it refers to the arts which have extensive relations with the public in public spaces. Public arts covers various kinds of styles, including plastic arts, performing arts and others as well, specifically, for instance, sculptures, murals, contrivances, sights, performances, songs, dances, etc. Public art distinguishes itself from other types of arts by its distinct features including but not limited to participatory, interactivity, procedural, questioning, ideas, diversity and rationality, all of which make creating of public art more focus on the way of expressing and exhibiting rather than selecting of materials, techniques or modeling styles. From this perspective, public art creations can be considered as a medium for expressing spirits and mental images. Therefore, publicus is the ultimate significance of public art.Based on the angle of view mentioned above, this paper reviewed numbers of public art creations, expanded on their locations, subject matters, creating ideas, expressing techniques, and modeling styles. In order to solve the current embarrassed status of public art, the paper also raised the concept of holistic design as a potential manner for the creating of public arts.
