Ditch is common remains in the field archaeology, which plays an important role in settlements division and the division of functional areas within a settlement. Ditch study is an important part of the settlements study, and the analysis of ditches in middle reaches of Yellow River which is the core region of Xia Shang Zhou Dynasty, is helpful to discuss the social stages and the settlement forms for ditches, thus reflecting the social and historical developments of the core area in Xia Shang Zhou period from a side. This thesis studies the ditches in middle reaches of Yellow River during Xia Shang Zhou period, focusing on the emergence, development and evolution for each type of ditch. It also associates ditches with settlements to discuss some social and historical issues such as the structure, the grade and the changes of settlements. The ditches with the meaning of boundary can be divided into ditches outside the settlement, ditches outside the palace area, ditches outside the workshop area and ditches surrounding the tomb(s). And the ditches outside the settlement can be divided into two kinds; they are the single ditches and the ditches accompanied by wall, and the number of the single ditches which gradually reduced during Xia Shang Zhou period and disappeared in Eastern Zhou period is less than the ditches accompanied by wall which gradually increased. The single ditches outside the workshop area developed into the ones accompanied by wall in Western and Eastern Zhou period. There are not many ditches outside the workshop area during Xia Shang Zhou period which only appeared in the functional areas with special status, reflecting the special status of the workshop. The ditches surrounding the tomb(s) in middle reaches of Yellow River during Xia Shang Zhou period first appeared in Western Zhou period, and developed to its peak in Eastern Zhou period. Qin's tombs have most ditches surrounded, whose function is to determine the domain of tomb(s).The changes of the region surrounded by ditch can reflect the changes of social situation, including the most basic unit of society, the control power of different social groups to resources, and the structure of social organization.
