Taking the English structure N1's N2 and N2 of N1 (genitive case) as the research subject, this thesis studies Uygur preparatory students'English acquisition and discusses problems in English teaching and textbooks in the preparatory college.Nowadays, English native speakers have various opinions on the use of the Modern English genitive case. As English learners, we should know how English native speakers use the genitive case, since we are trying to learn proper English. Here, questionnaires are used to identify English native speakers'use of the genitive case. The result shows that English native speakers hold identical views on eight types of the genitive case, which are N1's N2 possessive genitive, N1's N2 descriptive genitive, N2 of N1 possessive genitive, N2 of N1 objective genitive, N2 of N1 appositive genitive, N1's N2 & N2 of N1 possessive genitive, N1's N2& N2 of N1 partitive genitive and N1's N2 & N2 of N1 subjective genitive. In the research, Uygur preparatory college students who study in Minzu University of China are selected as the subjects and the methods of tests and interviews are used to collect data. The study finds that the students'English genitive learning is not satisfactory:the average accuracy rate is 43.1%; the gap between grade one and grade two is narrow, that is, students hardly make progress in English genitive learning after one year of study; students who have stronger English learning ability are better on English genitive learning; and the higher their level of Chinese competence is, the better they learn the English genitive case. Both internal and external factors affect genitive learning. The external factors mainly involve teaching methods and textbooks, while the major internal factors are Uygur language transfer, students'level of Chinese competence and their English acquisition ability. To deal with the problems, some suggestions are offered in the thesis, including the following:teach English genitive case continually, increase English culture input, contrast Uygur and English in English learning, and help low-Chinese level students on their English. The thesis also suggests that the textbook should explain the genitive case in detail and add English history to the culture salon section. It is tentative research. In future study, it is better to enlarge the number of subjects and to analyze the research findings more thoroughly.
