Russia, with a global influence power country; NATO,the biggest military political group; Therefore, the relationship between Russia and NATO is very important in the international community. NATO is the product of the United States in order to restrict the Soviet Union during the cold war, After the end of the cold war, NATO did not dissolve, and continue to exist through the transition, and start to take eastward enlargement plans. After the cold war has completed three enlargement: For the first time on March 12, 1999, The Czech republic, Hungary and Poland join the NATO; The second time on November 2, 2004, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria, the seven countries join the NATO; The third time on April 2009, Albania and Croatia joined the NATO. So far, has completed three times NATO enlargement, from 16 member states to 28 member states. Every time NATO’s eastward enlargement, Russia in the court of public opinion, military, diplomacy has taken different responses, although both failed to stop the pace of NATO’s eastward expansion, every eastward enlargement to Russia have squeezed strategic space, and make Russia facing greater threats and challenges, but also reduce the negative impact of Russia.Over all, although Russia and NATO on the enlargement has essential differences, but the relationship between the two sides will continue to the development of current situation, has cooperation but does not involve important aspects, have a fight but there would be no conflict, peace and development is still the main melody of the development of relations between Russia and the NATO.After the cold war between Russia and NATO’s eastward expansion of NATO relations as the main line, from the analysis of the different stages of the substance and the impact of NATO’s eastward expansion. This paper is divided into three parts: in the first part, discusses the NATO enlargement of background and their intentions; The second part discusses the three times NATO enlargement process and Russia in different period take different policy in Public opinion, military and diplomatic aspects. The third part discusses the Ukraine’s problems and prospects of the development of relations between Russia and the NATO.
