| This dissertation elaborates the three historical periods of Chen Tu ?hsiu?s democratic thought during the course of China?s modernazi- lion. In the early New Culture Movement period, Chen expounded the freedom of human rights, which is the spiritual aspect of democracy. Al- ter becoming a Marxist, he turned to the proprietary aspect and observed democracy from the angle of class analysis. In the later years, chen be- gan to emphasize the institutional aspect of democracy and to combine the above aspects together initially. It is these three aspects that make up the complete content of democracy. The evolution of Chen 憇 thought reflects his strenuous pursuing for China?s better prospects. From this, the dissertation illustrates the meaning of modern democracy and gives new appraisals to Chen Tu ?hsiu in some respects. |
