| Nowadays, economy and information industry are proliferating on a global basis; and international and domestic economic competition is becoming fiercer, while China is carrying out the construction of socialist market economy but facing serious problem in terms of regional economic development. At this time, China puts its strategy on the Development of Western China into practice. With regard to the problems and challenges China is confronted with, the Development of Western China is characterized by how to win competitive advantage in regional economic development.In this thesis, I begin with the analysis of regional advantage theory, especially the theory of regional competitive advantage originated from Michael E. Porter's National Advantage of Competitiveness. And then, I continue to analyze the features and influence on China's regional economic development by discussing the evolution of China's theory on regional advantage and looking into the main problems in western China's economic development. Finally, I put forward the related suggestions on how to establish regional advantage of competitiveness in China's west.Regional advantage refers to regional economic advantage in this thesis.By analyzing the relevant definitions on regional advantage and the evolution of past theories on regional advantage, I define regional advantage in two major categories: one is regional advantage of comparativeness; the other is regional advantage of competitiveness.According to the social and economic background in history and the difference in the research methods of economists, I divide the evolution process of regional advantage theory into three phases. In specific, the first phase is characterized by Adam Smith, Ricardo and Weber's theories during 1800s to 1900s; the second phase is from 1930s to 1970s. During this period, such theories as "technology gap" and "product cycle" contribute to regional advantage theory. The third phase is 1980s till today. National advantage of competitiveness and theories on clustering come out.After analyzing the evolution of regional advantage theories, I begin an in-depth study on advantage of comparativeness and advantage of competitiveness. I aim to point out that competitive advantage is the new theoretical foundation of regional advantage.According to Michael E. Porter, National advantage of competitiveness consists of four main parts, that is, factor conditions, home demand conditions, supporting and related industries, firms strategy, structure and rivalry; and industrial cluster is defined as "a geographically proximate group of interconnected companies and associated institutions in a particular field, linked by commonalties and complementarities." Many other scholars have also noticed cluster theories and advantage of competitiveness theory today.By generalizing the above-mentioned theories, I point out the basic features of regional advantage of competitiveness, which help me analyze the influence of this theory on China's regional economic development, find out the main problems in west China's economy and establish the advantage of competitiveness in China's west.In China, comparative advantage is in a dominant position in interpreting the regional division of labor. Before 1978, the regional economic development is characterized by balanced development of the west and the east, regardless of economic efficiency. After 1978, comparative advantage theory is adopted to analyze the regional division of labor and improve the efficiency of regional economic development. In spite of the positive influence of comparative advantage in China's regional development, it turns out to be hard to guide China's west development because of the rapid change of international and domestic economic situation.
