The concept of multi-polarization, as the important theory for the diplomacy of the Russian Federation , the important strategy and device of its foreign policy, reflects not only views of Russia on the international structure, but also its cognizance of its own status since its independence. It is a positive reaction upon the new subjective and objective circumstances. Though there was some initial touch upon the issue of multi-polarization in Russia s foreign policy domestically, comprehensive and systematic research has not yet been carried out. This thesis intends to make a systematic analysis of the concept in the context of its background, development history, meaning and nature, SI) as to find out the skeleton of Russian foreign policy.The thesis is consisted of four parts as follows: I. Background of the birth of the concept, mainly including influences of Russian geographic situation and changes in its overall strength as a power on domestic and f6reign securities environment. II. Its development history, including its germination, formation and development. III. Meaning and nature of the concept of multi-polarization, including the idea of multi-polarity, contents of the concept of multi-polarization, features, practices and nature. The underlying objective of Russia proposition of a multi-polar world lies in its intention to resume its deserved status as power and to be an influential polar in the multi-polar world. IV. Evaluation and expectation of the concept of multi-polarization, including arguments on the concept inside Russia, rationality and prospects of the concept, and its influence on China.This thesis argues that Russian concept of multi-polarization is a tactic topursue its national interests despite its weakened strength. Russia intends toestablish a ba1ance of power through it so as to resist the US attemPt topursue uni-polar hegemony and to accumulate power for Russia'srenalssance.
