Since the application for the reentry of GATT in 1986, China has overcome many obstacles in the past 13-year's negotiation. At the end of last year and in the middle of this year, China reached an agreement with both the United States and the European Union, paving the way for the entry into WTO at the end of this year or the beginning of the next year. Once again China's reentry into WTO become the focus of the world's attention. There are a lot of books and articles discussing the impact of China's entry into WTO on our domestic economy; however, few dwell on its impact on the economic and trade relations between Chinese mainland and Taiwan. As we all know the rise and fall of the trade relations across the Taiwan Straits are the result of political factors, in particular the interference of the Taiwan authority. In the second half of 1995, Li Denghui adopted the policy of "refraining from impatience", which had negative impact on the economic and trade development across the straits. However, Chinese mainland and Taiwan's entry into WTO will dramatically change the situation, forcing Taiwan authority to act in line with the requirement of WTO and relax the restrictions on the trade across the straits. This will not only help build closer the economic and political relations, but also become the turning point for the reunification of our country. That is why this paper explores the economic and trade relations after the entry into WTO.Chapter One is an introduction of the background information of Chinese mainland and Taiwan's entry into WTO. With the globalization of the world economy, the economic relations among countries are becoming much closer. Therefore, international organizations like WTO are playing more important roles in the process of economic globalization. GATT, WTO's predecessor, has organized 8 rounds of multilateral trade negotiations including the Uruguay Round between 1986 and 1993, and reached many agreements on multilateral trade liberalization. Since its establishment in January 1995, WTO has been advocating the liberalization of trade and investment, the reduction of tariffs and non-tariff barriers as well as the improvement of the investment environment in order to promote the globalization of the world economy and the free flow of trade, technology and finance. WTO has helped reach four agreements including the Agreement on the Flow of Natural Persons, the Agreement on Global Fundamental Telecommunication Service, the Agreement on Global Information Technology and the Agreement on Permanent Global Financial Service. WTO covers a wide range of activities and regulates the whole process of the global economic activities, strengthens the arbitration system, and monitors its member countries to implement their trade policies. Hence we can see that WTO is playing an increasingly important role in the world economy. The relationship of Chinese mainland and Taiwan with WTO undergoes lots of ups and downs due to the complicated historical and political reasons. As the biggest developing country in the world, China is an indispensable pole of the multi-polar world pattern. China ranks No. 7 in terms of economic scale and No, 9 in terms of trade status in the world, therefore it is considered to be one of the most promising countries with the fastest speed of development and the greatest potential. China adheres to the policy of reform and opening to the outside world, and will play an even more important role in the arena of the world economy. China's entry into WTO is an important step to go global. As one of the "four tigers", Taiwan accomplished a miracle of economic growth, an average of 8% growth rate between 1960's and 1990's. Recently,Taiwan's GNP per capita exceeded US$12,000. Taiwan's international trade ranks No. 15, and its dependency on international trade is over 80%. Therefore Taiwan's entry into WTO is the only way to go global.Chapter Two is about the impact of the entry into WTO on the economic and trade relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits, i...
