Business merger & acquisition (M&A) has a history of 100 years, and there have been five intensive periods of M&A activity. The 1990s saw the fifth M&A frenzy, which was characterized by unprecedented scale and number. It was spearheaded by multinationals, a driving force behind the economic globalization, and was conducted throughout the world. The important role played by multinationals in the global economy predicts that the economic landscape will be redrawn by the fifth M&A frenzy. From the perspective of Marxist theories and with references to modern western economics, this paper combines historical and logic analysis, norm and empirical analysis, discusses the characteristics, causes, influences and trends of M&A in the 1990s and examines its influences on China's economy after its entry into China and appropriate countermeasures. The paper also makes suggestions in intensifying China's opening-up and its cooperation with meta companies, improving the quality and quantity of foreign direct investment, national economy adjustment, industry restructuring and the tactics which can adopted by China companies, with a view to enhancing China's strategic position in international competition and gathering pace to integrate itself into world economy. To find its place on the world economic stage and stand among the economic powers in the new century, China must strength its hold in multinational M&A field.
