The deviation of the quality characteristic from the target value is the source of the quality loss and the increasing quality costs of the product. So to bring down the variation of the quality characteristic is the premier task of the Quality Engineering. In the condition of keeping or reducing the quality costs, Robust Design which acts as the core technology of the QE is very important in decreasing or eliminating the variation of the technical properties, product performance or the technical process, reducing the sensitivities of the quality characteristics to the influencing factors to make it have a robust performance or stability technical condition and optimizing the economic and technological effectiveness of the product or process of the R&D and advanced engineering activities to make the product owe the competitive advantages. Above all, this paper does some research on the basic variation theory, expounds the source, classification and the statistical laws and demonstrates the relationship between the reducing of variation and the quality improvement activities of quality management, quality engineering and technological renewal by jointly considering the variation theory and the three hierarchy theory. Then this paper makes a detailed analysis of the classification, ideal function and three evaluation indexes about the situation of the variation and makes a suggestion about how to choose the output quality characteristic effectively. To find the key process that causes the variation of the output characteristic in the production system, this paper proposes two effective methods on how to detecting the variation sources: Cluster Analysis Technology and Factor Analysis. Especially, with the help of statistical software, this paper makes a computer simulation of the Cluster Analysis Technology. After finding the variation sources, this paper eliminates or reduces the variation resources, which have a significant affect on the output quality characteristic, to reduce the variation to improve the quality of the product by using the basic robust design method of Taguchi.
