Applying the theory of economic growth, this thesis expounds that the most important sources to promote the economic growth in China are transference of industrial structure, investment of essential factors of production and regional technology innovation. In the first chapter, the author applies the method of shift-share analysis to analyze the effects of industrial structure of 1980s and 1990s in East Middle West Region of China and the change of its contribution to economic growth; and according to proportional S-S and competitive S-S, the author divides provinces and cities into different type areas. In the same way, the author studies the effects, which were caused by the factors of structure and competitive strength of the primary industry, secondary industry and tertiary industry in 1990s on East Middle West Regions' economic growth. The essay selects eastern cities and provinces such as Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and liaoning, Middle region provinces such as Shanxi and Hubei, western provinces such as Sichuan and Shanxi, and applies the quotient of location to calculate the specialization indexes of various kinds of trades of manufacturing industry in 1989 and 1997 so as to study the feature of the change of industrial structure. The following are the conclusions from the above analysis:(1) In 1980s, the effects of structure promotion in economic growth are conspicuous in most provinces and cities in East Middle West Regions, and the factor of competitive strength has some advantages in six cities in the East.(2) In 1990s, the factor of competitive strength played a major role in the economic growth in most provinces of East and Middle Regions, and the effects of structure in seven provinces in the East are obvious. But in the West Region, except Sichuan, Xinjiang and Chongqing, other provinces did not have the advantages of the factors of structure and competitive strength.(3) In the East Region, the competitive strengths of primary industry, secondary industry and tertiary industry are all good, especially that the competitive strength of the secondary industry is obviously better than that of Middle and West Regions. In the Middle Region, the competitive strength of the primary industry and tertiary industry are not bad, that of the secondary industry is just so so. In the West Region, except the primary industry, the competitive strengths of secondary industry are very poor.(4) In the East Region, cities and provinces like Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang have kept their high level of specialization. The levels of specialization in Middle provinces like Shanxi and Hubei did not change much. But in the most powerful western provinces like Shanxi and Sichuan, the degree of specialization declined totally, thus made their positions decline rapidly in the nationwide regional division of labor.Chapter Two analyzes, by using the Solow Remainder, the total factors investment and total factors productivity in the economic growth of the Middle-WestRegion from 1978 to 2000, and the changes in the contribution to economic growth. Different types are classified by the relationship between the two factors, total factors investment growth, the total factors productivity growth, and economic growth. By regression analysis, the integrated factors productivity of different regions in 2000 is attained and the efficiency for funds application in East Middle West Region is studied. Comparing with those in East Middle West Region, the capital formation and technological progresses are in shortage.By the above analyses, the following are obtained:(1). During the period from 1978 to 2000, the economic growth of China is achieved by the growth of input such as labor and capital, whose contributions are 55.52%. On the other hand, the total factors growth is also important by reaching the level of 44.48%. With regard to the East Middle West Region, to be more specific, there are little differences between the contributions respectively by total factors investment and total factors productivity. The...
