This thesis expounds the origin, form and development of various types of nationalism in the ex-Soviet Union and analyzes the function of the big-Russian-nationality Chauvinism, local national Chauvinism and the national separatism in the process of the Soviet Union's disintegration by using the ethnic theory of the Marxism, Meanwhile in the last part of the thesis, some useful suggestions and enlightenments are put forward. The thesis can be divided into five parts as follow.The first part discusses some basic theories about nationalism, including the meaning, origin, development, change and functions.The second part discusses the rising and development of Russian nationalism. The development of Russian nationalism had close tie with the establishment and development of the tsarist Russia. Therefore this part introduces how the tsarist Russia became a big power from a small country. Also, the character and forms of Russian nationalism in different periods are introduced.The third part expounds the development, forms and the functions in the process of the Soviet Union's disintegration. In Russia, the relationship between Russian and other ethnic minorities was very bad because of the long times of nation oppression.
