Mitterrand was the leader of French left-wing party-Socialist Party, and came into the presidency in 1981, after which, he put human right diplomacy into the agenda of French foreign policy and conducted the French foreign relations under the principle of human rights. In fact, Mitterrand's foreign policy of human rights aimed at political benefits, including establishing his own political prestige, highlighting the so-called unique role of France in the international affairs, and maintaining the independent status of France as one of the powers. However, President Mitterrand's measuring the Sino-French relationship by human right diplomacy aggregated the bilateral relation badly. At the turn of spring and summer in 1989, the western countries turned theirs to the political disturbance in Beijing, and exercised a sanction against China under the pretext of protecting human rights, causing an international climate of anti-China, in which, France which was ruled by Mitterrand government played a prominent role. To be concrete, France issued a denouncement against China in tough terms, exercised an all-round sanction in political, economic, and military fields, and urged the western countries to pursue a unitary sanction against China in the G7 summit conference in an active way. Throughout a series of diplomatic actions in both bilateral and multilateral dimensions, France imposed heavy international pressures on China, which trapped Sino-French relationship in an all-time low since the establishment of diplomatic relationship between P.R.C. and the Fifth Republic of France. To counter the French foreign policy of human rights, China stabilized the domestic situation quickly and carried out effective diplomatic struggles to resist the international pressures, which ended in a new prospect in the field of Chinese foreign affairs. Forced by both international and domestic factors, Mitterrand had no choice but to repair the damaged Sino-French relationship. Although Mitterrand's human right diplomacy came to an end as the term of his office expired, as a sort of diplomatic principle, human right diplomacy has had an enduring affection on the Sino-French relationship. Therefore, China should be prepared against such affection in the long run. This dissertation has a detailed introduction and analysis to Mitterrand's human right diplomacy, and also expounds the affection on Sino-French relationship caused by Mitterrand's human right diplomacy in the basis of evolution of Sino-French relationship from aggravation to improvement from 1989 to 1995, and at last states the author's own opinion on how to tackle human right diplomacy in a new era.
