On The Improvement Of The Wto Dispute Settlement Mechanism

World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement mechanism (DSM) is the important pillar of the WTO multilateral trading system, which is also the unique contribution to the stability of global economy. Without such a mean of settling disputes, the efficiency of rule-based WTO system will be greatly reduced. Compared to "the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade" (GATT), the current "Understanding on Rules and Procedures Governing the Settlements of Dispute" (DSU) takes the dispute settlements under the administration of justice in the WTO Agreement rather than in a political - diplomatic oriented way, which is characterized both in reliability and predictability.The WTO dispute settlement mechanism plays in the coordination of international trade relations an enormous role, while it also exposed a lot of defects range from specific rules, procedures, to the actual inadequate running effectiveness. This article draws on research results on WTO dispute settlement mechanism both domestic and abroad, combines with analysis of typical cases, aims at improving the mechanism, and perfects its deficiencies and shortcomings which help understand the mechanism of the operating mechanism.This paper comprise of three parts. The first part introduces the procedure of DSM. The second part discusses the defect of current DSM procedure. The last part according to above-mentioned analysis, bring forward suggest on improvement ofDSM.
