In the Middle of the 20th century, the Korean Peninsula finally split by the interaction of the internal and external factors. Since the split, the relations between North and South Korea have shown a good momentum of development, driving by some positive factors. Although the prospects of reunification are bright, the setbacks which have experienced by the two sides for more than half a century, as well as the difficulties faced in the future are realistic. The reason is that there are a series of obstacles in the process of reunifying the Korean peninsula. Long-term system differences and confrontation between North and South Korea are the factors of many obstacles. Both the opposes on the political and economic institutions and the serious military confrontation do harm to the reunification. In addition, the reunification plans of two Koreas have differences, including the state structure of the reunified country, the future of the USFK and so on. Because of its prominent geographical position, the Korean peninsula's unification is also affected by some big countries. In order to achieve its strategy in East Asia and the world, the United States expects to maintain the Korean peninsula divided. Because of its past colonial rule on Korean Peninsula and the territorial disputes with Korean, Japan is the country which is the most reluctant to see national reunification on the Korean Peninsula. And Russia takes a wait-and-see attitude on the reunification of the peninsula, for he is not sure the political status of the peninsula after the reunification. Only do the South and the North make efforts to handle and overcome these obstacles, the relations between the two sides can make the smooth development, then realize the reunification on the peninsula.
