After the Cold War, anti-Americanism has arisen and surged all over the world, becoming a unique phenomenon in the international community. However, anti-Americanism, which originated even before the founding of the United States, is not"something fresh". The upsurge of global post-Cold-War anti-Americanism was triggered by the U.S.-led unipolar hegemony in the international political system. Many factors account for currently wide-spread anti-Americanism, including American nationalism, American policies reinforcing hegemony and requirement of other countries with regard to their situations. The essence of the anti-Americanism is anti-hegemony, which is to question the legitimacy of American hegemony and challenge it.As America's "ally", South Korea has witnessed great anti-Americanism waves after the Cold War, which has aroused much concern to the international community. The anti-Americanism in South Korea is closely related to the inequality of both sides in the alliance. Immediate cause also includes American hegemony symbolized by American policy of the Korean peninsula, economic and trade relations between U.S and South Korea and U.S. forces in South Korea(USFK). Furthermore, democratization and revival of nationalism in South Korea are also conducive to the emergence of anti-Americanism. Anti-Americanism, which reflects "pragmatism" in South Korea, is a protestation against American hegemony.Upsurging anti-Americanism in South Korea and consequent"South-Korea- resistance"attitude of the Americans have cast a shadow on the ROK-US Alliance. Nevertheless, given the national interests of South Korea and the U.S. and American strategic prospects in Northeast Asia, both sides have to maintain the cooperative relationship. After the Cold War, the relations between the South Korea and the U.S. have undergone a profound restructuring, moving from the U.S.-led alliance to real collaboration, in which the South Korea has come to play a more significant role. In the future the alliance between the two countries will subsist, though it may go through many changes and encounter instability. Anti-Americanism in South Korea is a social trend, which manifests resistance to the United States of the Korean people. Its detrimental impact on Korea-U.S. relationship is far from essential.
