Cultural identity refers to a sense of belonging to an individual or group for therespective culture, and as its own code of conduct and guidelines. Cultural identity isa significant factor of a nation-state to maintain unification; and an important drivingforce for its development. It has both stability and variability, which requires us totreat it with "dynamic" concept rather than "static" concept. And it is the unity ofdiversity and complex, which requires us to treat it with "open" attitude rather than"closed" attitude. At present, cultural exchange across the Taiwan Straits has keptincreasing, but there are still many problems. It has many reasons; one significantreason of them is the difference of cultural identity between the two sides of theTaiwan Straits. Although their cultures have the same origin, but it does not mean thecultural identity of the two sides is the same. Culture is an objective phenomenon, andcultural identity is a subjective phenomenon. The objective thing can often bedistorted by subjective opinion. Therefore, since the recovery of Taiwan, due to theman-made factors, the cultures of Chinese Mainland and Taiwan have emerged on afull confrontation although they have the same root. At the same time, due to Taiwan'seconomic and military completely dependent on Western countries, especially theUnited States and Japan. Taiwan's western cultural identity in the six decades has beenstrengthening. Consequently, when we emphasized that the cross-strait cultural ishomologous, the differences must be realized. Clarify the sixty years changes ofcultural identity will provide a reference value to strengthen the cultural exchangesbetween the two sides. This paper has four parts, the first describes the Taiwan'scultural identity in the Chiang Kai-shek and Chiang Ching-kuo period(1945-1987);The second part describes the Taiwan's cultural identity in the Lee Teng-huiperiod(1988-1999); third section describes the Taiwan's cultural identity in the ChenShui-bian period ( 2000-2008). The phenomenon, reasons and influences of theTaiwan's cultural identity in these three periods are analyzed respectively. The fourthsection of this paper mainly based on the evolution of Taiwan's cultural identity tomake a few recommendations in the hope of cross-strait cultural exchanges smoothly.
