Teaching culture is an important part of English language teaching. With people’s deepening recognition to the importance of teaching culture in language classes, each process and elements related to cultural teaching, such as the purpose, methods, contents, have aroused great interest. How to evaluate the cultural teaching has become a question we have to face, because scientific evaluation system is a guarantee to achieve the goal of cultural teaching.In this paper, the author takes M school in Nanjing as an example and investigates the current status of cultural teaching through questionnaires, interviews and other methods. The results show that the idea of cultural teaching has enjoyed a great popularity among the teachers and the implementation of cultural teaching has made a greater progress. However, there are still some problems to be solved. For example, language teachers are still relatively vague about how to evaluate cultural teaching. The evaluation methods and standards of cultural teaching remain the same with those of the traditional language teaching, which cannot reflect the unique characteristics of cultural teaching. Cultural evaluation frames and cultural index systems haven’t been established yet. All these factors have limited the further development of cultural teaching, and the evaluation cannot play an important part in promoting cultural teaching. Therefore, based on the results of the survey and analysis, this study attempts to make a preliminary construction of the cultural teaching evaluation system from the view of classroom cultural teaching and three aspects: cultural teaching preparation, cultural teaching process, and cultural teaching effects. After clarifying the value of cultural teaching, specifying the criteria and constructing indicators, the author takes M school in Nanjing as an example and makes a case study about cultural teaching evaluation, and analyzes the evaluation results using statistical software. Then based on the analysis, the author makes a summary and reflection on cultural teaching and on constructing cultural teaching evaluation system. After that, this paper provides some advice on improving the classroom cultural teaching evaluation system and proposes the safeguard mechanism. In the last part of this paper, the author points out the limitations and prospects of this study.
