With the guide of the ideas of New Curriculum, the present Chinese teaching (for Chinese native speakers) does not only focus on students’mastering of the language knowledge, but their language competences, moral cultivation and aesthetic taste. As the most splendid pearl in the history of Chinese literature, poetry has the most advantages in Chinese teaching that other literary forms cannot compare with. Poems in primary school Chinese textbooks are considered to be an important teaching materials. Those poems are usually short, rhythmically harmonious and interesting. Therefore, they are welcomed and loved by students.Teaching poems in primary school has made great achievements up to now. However, there are still some problems. For instance, students’learning attitudes are not active enough. Teachers cannot offer effective instructions and lack of enough passion when teaching. Students do not have many opportunities to practice and their interests cannot be fully considered. The class teaching is not attractive. Above problems are usually caused by obsolete teaching concepts, unprofessional teachers, formalistic teaching process and improper teaching methods, etc.In order to solve these problems, reforms must be taken when teaching poems in primary schools. Firstly, teaching concept should be updated. As we all know, teaching concept and practice are mutually influential. That is to say, teaching concept should be appropriate to have students correctly influenced by the core meanings of poems, especially while facing such an ancient literary form which needs to be savored carefully in such a fast-paced society. Secondly, teachings skills and methods should be improved. Teachers should play an important role in class to show the charming of poems to students. In order to realize this purpose, teachers must improve their own abilities of understanding poems and teaching skills. Thirdly, teaching process should be bettered. Through stimulating students’ interests and adopting some proper methods, teaching poems in class can be more interesting and attractive. Finally, teaching methods should be improved. Only if appropriate and effective methods are used, the teaching results can be satisfying. Teachers can improve their teaching methods from the three aspects:reading poems, tasting poems and writing poems.
