The reform and development of the management of university are focuses of many countries and their people. Student participating in the management of university is a tendency of the recent development of university. Yet, people have many debates on the role of student in the management. Because the European-American developed countries has preceded in the practice of college student participation, it's necessary and of value to study the student participation in European-American developed countries from the aspects of both theory and practice .The research employs the methods of combining history and reality, theory and practice.The research employs the historical methods to analyze the European-American practice with many literatures as foundations; by comparing some developed countries cases of student participation in the management of university. I find out their general characters . After the descriptions, I give out my evaluations.The thesis consists of five parts. The first part brings forth the background, aims, methods and literatures available, and defined several related conceptions: student participation, higher school management, etc. Part two justifies the student participation from several disciplines such as politics, economics, sociology and management. The third and main part endeavors to describe the western practice of student participation, including its history, development and status quo. In the forth part, 1 give out positive and negative evaluation on student participation which is good for improving teaching quality and management efficiency in higher school and protecting student's benefits. Finally, in the last part, I offer some suggestions on solving the limits of student participation.
