Jiang Fan (1761 -11831), born in GanQuan(YangZhou) of Jiang Su province, styled Ziping or Zhengtang, is a classical scholar of study of Confucian in Qian-Jian period. JiangFan derived his academic thoughts from Wu school of Sinology, and read extensively and wrote plenty of works. He particularly was famous for his The Sinological Pedigree ofQing Dynasty. The purpose of this thesis is to disclose his academic thoughts and the ideas of that book by investigation of the academic trajectory, and evaluates Jiang Fan and his work objectively, then deepens the comprehension of Qian-Jia academy. The thesis proceeds mainly according to two considerations below:Firstly, the purport. Tracing an integral academic changes in nearly 300 years is the promise of this thesis. In such an age as academic trends varied dramatically, the academic multilateral conversion demonstrates the vitality of the academy. In a whole, the academic trends from later Ming Dynasty to middle Qing Dynasty took its road of abandoning Xu and practicing Shi based on the critics towards Lixue. What this thesis concerns most is to search Jiang Fan's academic thoughts in such a background, to illustrate his sinology and issues raised in his book, and to anatomize the initiation of the academic changes embodied by the book.Secondly, the trail of the thesis. What frequents the thesis is how to make a logic exploration into the scholar's minds and multi-angle and multi-dimension analysis, which is also the key to the structural arrangements. On this point, Xu Fuguan's Textual Criticism Issues in Chinese Ideological History Study enlightens the writer and keynotes this thesis. That article said:"Textual criticism in Chinese ideological history study should extend to another three aspects. No. 1 is a combination of understanding thepeople and society?Ideological history study should explain to the following generations the ancients' minds which relates closely to their aptitudes, personality, family background and experiences. The times being accounts for the formation of the ancients' minds greatly. Given the entwining of the relations above, to make a clear test is the first step towards full exposition... Secondly, to retrace the historical thread of the ideological development deserves our concern. Not only the contents have theirs own path, but the appearance can be researched. Only holding the trace can shoulder the historic responsibility as ideological history, and orientate every thought fairly and exactly... The third aspect is to generalize conclusion from the whole book by which explanatory notes, version and collation can be reached... Complete a book and then assort, analyze, transcribe, integrate and compare the contents."The thesis can be divided into three sections as following:The first part: Comb Jiang Fan's career and heritage of his study to achieve understanding him and his theory. The second part: Make a review of The Sinological Pedigree of Qing Dynastyand relevant academic issues. This part gives a definite analysis on that book based on its finishing time, purpose, editorial features and cull of the materials; "Huang-Gu issue" offers a revelation of the academic purport of the book; the version and The Complement of The Sinological Pedigree of Qing Dynasty can help to value its academic influence; the emotion and the fact remark the book's style; The Catalogue of Confucian Masters And Their Works of Qing Dynasty casts more light on the book. The third part: Inquire into the academic thought of Jiang Fan. We can learn that Jiang Fan deprives his core principle桽tudy following upon Fu-Zheng and behave as Cheng-Zhu梖rom such academic positions as Han-Sung theory, views on the classics written in Li and Zhuan and the identification of Wu School and Wan School respectively.
