Students in middle schools in China sometimes get failed in English learning. Experts and teachers have paid much attention to this phenomenon. In this thesis, the writer has found out the main reasons why students get failed, based on the research on the foreign language teaching and learning theories. Teaching process and learning process have direct effects on English learning. During the course of English teaching, the teachers' proficiency, approaches, methods and teaching strategies play an important role. The students' abilities, language aptitude, attitude, motivation, habits and learning strategies are the main factors. This thesis also covers the society, family environments, including the atmosphere of English studying at school, which also have an impact on the English learning. It is believed that if the schools have a good atmosphere of English learning, the students can learn English more effectively.Students should be encouraged to restart to learn English even if they have already got failed. So sufficient opportunities should be offered to them. By analyzing the nature of language and the nature of language teaching, the writer also gives some advice on how to teach English more effectively both in and out of the classroom.Hopefully, this thesis will be helpful to both teachers and students in middle schools in China.
