Reading is generally recognized as a very important way to learn the target language. So in the English classroom in China, reading class has received most attention and investment of time and effort both from the students and the teacher. Moreover, the National Curriculum Standards for English Teaching stresses the importance of integrating students' personal development with the English language learning. However, according to a survey conducted by this researcher, the teacher-centered model is still widely used in the English reading class, which leads to the students' poor ability of language use and the lack of good reading and learning habits. It requires us teachers to reform the traditional instruction model in the reading class and adopt a more enlightened model which can carry out the ideas recommended by the New Curriculum Standards so as to meet the needs of our times. On the basis of humanism learning theory, constructivism theory and task-based learning theories, a new model is proposed by the author of this thesis, which intends to pilot the students through learning by a lesson-learning plan with a series of learning tasks and activities for the students to fulfill in the hope of facilitating their learning of English and all-round development at the same time. The new model has been applied to teaching for a school term in order to test its validity and feasibility. The results of the study show that it is a feasible and effective way to stimulate the students' interest in learning English, to help the students form a habit of self-directed learning, and to develop the students' ability of language use.
