"New Curriculum standards for Junior School English" attaches much importance to formative evaluation. Formative test is one of the mainly ways of formative evaluation. It is found that our teachers don't think much of formative test. It seems that they seldom care about students' needs and requirements after the tests. Therefore, the survey focuses on the quality, quantity, validity, reliability and backwash of formative tests in common junior school. It also includes the students' attitude and requirements about the tests, and how much our teachers know about the theory of language testing. It is hoped more teachers can take formative tests into consideration, so that our teachers can obtain effective feedback from them, to improve the teaching quality, decrease the student's testing anxiety, enhance all the students' faith, help them gain the confidence to learn English well.Based on the theory of language testing, the paper investigates the English testing phenomena in my school by the means of questionnaire, interviews and analysis of testing papers. The survey result reveals the existing problems, and then analyzes the causes. Finally, the paper provides some purpose for our teachers. It is concluded that teachers should make every possible effort to ensure the test quality, including making a choice about the testing content, lessening the testing frequency rationally, pay more attention to students' needs and requirements. All the teachers should improve their own knowledge about the theory of language testing.
