In recent years, because of its flexible networking form, wireless ad hoc network has become a hot spot by the reasercher in wireless network fields. However, the short of efficient management makes it can'tsatisfy the need of people. The emergement and evolution of cognitive networks bring a new technology manner to compensate the deficiency of wireless ad hoc network. The combination of cognitive networks andwireless ad hoc network is cognitive wireless ad hoc network, which may meet the need of the people in the future.Based on characters and key technologies of wireless ad hoc networks and cognitive networks, this paper contributes works to cognitive wireless ad hoc networks in the following aspects:1. An efficient cognitive architecture is designed. This architecture contains network-wide cognitive structure and node-wide structure. With regard to network-wide cognitive structure, considering nervous system of vertebrates network-wide cognitive function architecture is designed; referring to social organized structure of mankind network-wide cognitive orgnizaed architecture is designed. Undering the network-wide architecture, node-wide cognitive structure is designed by cross-layer basing on current layered network system.2. Those parameters in network-wide and node-wide cognitive architecture that influence the performance of networks are defined as cognitive information. The expression and quanlification of cognitive information are discussed.3. In one hand, cognitive process is a whole dymanic process that needs to dymanically interact cognitive information in cognitive architecture; in other hands, the end-to-end transmission of data is completed by the cognition results. Cognitive routing is designed to achieve two aspects functions.4. Cognitive routing is realized by basing on OLSR. In this paper, cognitive function models of cognitive architecture merge with OLSR to design bandwidth estimation, modification of MPR selection, spanning cognitive routing that consider 5. OPNET was selected as simulation tool. Cognitive architecture and routing algorithm are realized on MANET models contained in OPNET by programming. OLSR and cognitive routing simulate with the different network scenes was set up to obtain the simulation resualts. Those simulation results veritify the cognitive function of cognitive routing and cognitive routing performance is better than OLSR.The work of this paper realizes the function of cognitive architecture and routing that is designed in the beginning and completes better data tansmission under the conduction of cognitive results. These support theory and experiment foundation for the fouther reaserch of cognitive wireless ad hoc network.
