The problems caused by urban traffic are becoming a"bottleneck"to constrain economic development of large and medium cities in China, so it is more and more valued for the government and public to improve the transport system. At the same time, the traffic network of cities is also increasingly complicated with the rapid development of economy. However, most of traffic devices have not connected with the center network at present, and it is always a difficulty for urban traffic to work together with traffic devices. Therefore, it is extremely necessary and imperative for existing equipments to upgrade toward the direction of intelligence and network, but it must be primarily considered to seek a low cost solution in the process of upgrading.The effective solution of solving current traffic situation is to establish fairly perfect transport monitoring system for the ministry of communications. In this case, combining with developmental features of Chinese cities, this paper puts forward a viable solution: new Wireless Transport Monitoring System (WTMS) based on ZigBee and geomagnetic sensor after referencing advanced technology and managing experience at home and abroad. WTMS puts transport monitoring together with wireless sensor network from hardware to software, this is to say, the integrated technology for the traffic detector based on geomagnetic sensor and ZigBee technology which is a short-range wireless communication of low power, low cost and flexible networking, will be applied to modern urban transport system to achieve integration truly for WTMS.The main objective of WTMS is to adapt to changes of dynamic traffic status. The control center will monitor vehicle access and signal beacon by analyzing the traffic data which are collected by the traffic detector to control transportation effectively. In addition, the control center can also make use of these traffic data to take prompt measures in the event of taking place traffic accidents, which will help reduce traffic congestion and optimize road routes. In a word, WTMS will significantly raise the capacity of existing roads and handle sudden traffic accidents opportunely, thus the system will mitigate traffic jam and improve traffic conditions. According to the theories of ZigBee technology and geomagnetic sensor and their specific applications in transport monitoring, the specific implementation of WTMS is expounded comprehensively and systematically by comparing and analyzing in detail the characteristics and feasibility of different designs which are used to realize this system. Simultaneity, the detailed framework of hardware and software of WTMS is designed for the specific chip selection of ZigBee wireless RF processor and magnetic sensor. Finally, the experiment of traffic detection is fulfilled and its results are compared briefly by analyzing the sample data.
