The Cellular Automaton is one kind of time, spatial and the condition separate dynamics system, is the dynamic system's evolution through the simple interaction constitutes of the structure cell. As one evolved complex behavior dynamic system, the Cellular Automaton has Information processing high parallelism and evolved behavior complexity characteristics and so on, it has its original superiority in the information encryption and the information hiding specially the image processing and the image encryption domain, it has the very important theory significance and the widespread application prospect. The traditional text information encryption's technology were no longer satisfies the digital image the encryption, and does not conform to the modern cryptology trend of development. Therefore, the present paper in research Cellular Automaton's cryptology characteristic, parallelism as well as behavior complexity and so on characteristic, and the Chaos system's cryptology characteristic, studies the digital image encryption technology based on the Chaos Cellular Automaton. The performance of reversible cellular automata image encryption algorithm can be greatly improved by our algorithm which can encrypt effectively the gray image.The major work and innovations in the article are as follows:(1) This paper elaborated the image encryption principle and the performance evaluation criteria of the image encryption algorithm, elaborated advantage and disadvantage to each kind of image encryption algorithm, described the trend of development of the image encryption algorithm, with emphasis introducted Cellular Automaton's characteristic and application, and its dynamic evolved behavior cryptology characteristic.(2) An image encryption algorithm, which is based on the Chaos Cellular Automaton,is proposed, which organic unifies in together through the Chaos Mapping system and the Cellular Automaton.It use chsod sysytem's extreme sensitivity and so on cryptology chsrscteristics, under the Cellular Automaton's evolved rules,realizes the performance more superior image encryption algorithm.(3) An method of two-dimensional reversible cellular automaton's structure, which use a univariate reversible cellular automaton rule and the definite value cellular automaton rule through certain form's operation. It obtains a new two-dimensional reversible cellular automaton rule.(4) The Chaos Cellular Automaton encryption algorithm is applied to a actual image encryption to test the performance of it and compare with the other image encrytion algorithm. The experimental result indicated the Chaos Cellular Automaton encryption algorithm is more superior in the key space, the gradation change mean value and the similarity aspect.
