With the extensive applications of information technology, the existing liquefied gas bottles are ident i fied and managed by bar code technology in Shanghai Gas. However, bar code has read-only information with a limi ted capacity. Moreover, they are too easy to be scratched, folded, polluted or fallen off, so that the scanners will not be able to identify the target. In addition, Bar code technology can not be used to identify single unit and fakes. For the existing system, the increasing numbers of the bottles and circulating speed have gone beyond the scope. Many problems occur during the circulation, such as, some illegal companies steal the genuine gas bottles from Shanghai Gas and then fill their own products into the bottles; unqualified gas bottles circulates on manufacturing lines; the quality control system for detecting overdued gas failed and overdued or unqualified gas bottles are not discarded as required. Therefore, in order to solve the above problems, bringing RFID technology into safety management system of dangerous chemicals gas bottles is very necessary.Initially, the current situation and existing problems in safety management system of dangerous chemicals gas bottles are analyzed. The necessity of the applications of RFID and the establishment of new safety management system is recognized as well. On these bases, the main functions and the core process of liquefied gas bottles safety management system in Shanghai Gas are discussed. Secondly, the whole structure of safety management system is analyzed, and then the core sub systems from tagging, data collection and exchange to data center management are designed in details. Among them, the focus is put on the application of gas bottle automatic management in circulations such as tagging, testing, filling, and delivering. Finalizing the circulation can make a great contribution to post-accident tracks. So does the dynamic monitoring and safety management the gas bottles. Finally, the prospect is made for the development of RFID in the safety management field, and meanwhile some deficiencies are pointed out in current applications.
