With the development of Multimedia technique, image compression plays an important role in the storage and transfers of mass image data. A favorable image compression technique can not only achieve high compression ratio and definition but meet such demands by Progressive Transmission, and other applications. As a new and excellent tool used for signal analysis and processing, wavelet analysis has a perfect performance on both local time and frequency domain. The representative algorithm in the field of wavelet transform--multiresolution, whose fundamental idea behind is to analyze according to scale. Absolutely, it can detach the relativity in a signal efficiently. The embedded zerotree wavelet algorithm by Shapiro, is a simple, yet remarkably effective, image compression algorithm, having the property that the bits in the bit stream are generated in order of importance, yielding a fully embedded code. A deep research on static image compression is presented in this paper. On the basis of theoretical work above, programming achieves corresponding algorithm. It's proved by the experiment that, this method is successful and excels JPEG and Shapiro's EZW in result.
