| 3G (IMT-2000) mobile communication system can provide many kinds of multimedia services with QoS to subscribers that communicate with each other or with users access to fixed network by using mobile station anywhere and anytime. As a family member of EVIT-2000, UMTS adopts WCDMA as its radio transmission technology, thus UMTS is well-known as WCDMA communication system. In UMTS phase one, core network is compatible with GSM phase two plus core network. Because of the domination of GSM in the world, the evolution from GSM to UMTS is the main stem from 2G to 3G.As a circuit switched system, GSM aimed at voice and low speed data while UMTS provides multitype service with QoS. For the smooth transition from GSM to UMTS, GPRS is involved in. It adds packet switched mode. The Non-Access Stratum of UMTS is divided into two sublayers (mobile management sublayer and session management sublayer) and split up into contol plane and user plane. Contol plane is for signaling and user plane is for data.This discourse is based on the 3 GPP procotols released in March 2001 and the author's work experience in 3G product-line of Wireless Department of Huawei Technical Ltd. It analyses the hiberarchy and functions of packet-switched domain in UMTS with focus on the functions, state machines and signaling procedures of PMM and SM. The analysis of signaling procedures based on the understanding of multiple protocols depicts an interactive message stream throughout UE, RAN and CN. Accordding to these analysis, we have designed and implemented PMM and SM in UE. |
