Today's GSM platform is a hugely successful wireless technology and an unprecedented story of global achievement. GSM is an open, non-proprietary system that is constantly evolving. One of its great strengths is the international roaming capability.The advantages of the modulation method OMSK (the Gaussian pre-filtered minimum shift keying) include bandwidth efficiency and constant envelope. These advantages were some of the reasons why OMSK was adopted as the modulation scheme for today's GSM.Further enhancements in data capability over the core GSM network will be provided with the introduction of Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution - known as EDGE.EDGE uses a new modulation scheme - 8PSK(8 Phase Shift Keying modulation) - to enable the transmission of large amounts of data at a high speed - 384 kilobits per second using existing GSM infrastructure. As 384kbit/s is the data speed being offered in the first phase of third generation deployment, EDGE could offer an alternative route for GSM operators who will not have third generation licenses.8PSK is a new modulation scheme that is more bandwidth efficient than GMSK modulation scheme used in the GSM standard. 8PSK has the potential to increase the data rate of existing GSM systems by a factor of three.For 8PSK is a new modulation scheme, there are few papers about it. In the paper, based on the mathematical definition in the protocol made by ETSI Special Mobile Group, 8PSK is assayed and simulated thoroughly to verify its validity.The paper is done based on the project of BTS 3.0 in GSM, which funded by HuaWei Technologies Co. Ltd. The task is to develop a baseband modulation chip, in which GMSK/PSK modulation functions are realized to meet the upgrading request of the BTS products.The main work of the paper is as follows: 1) Discuss in particular the principle of the modulation schemes - GMSK and 8PSK.2) Design, optimize and simulate the algorithms of GMSK/8PSK modulation scheme.3) Transform the algorithms into the algorithms convenient for ASIC realization and simulate the resulted algorithms.4) Achieve success with ASIC design.
