ShiMing is an important glossarial work in the history of Chinese philology which was composed by LiuXi of late Han Dynasty. This book is as famous as ErYa, FangYan and ShuoWen. However, there are errors in all of the present editions of ShiMing because a long time has gone since it was composed. Since the Qing Dynasty, many scholars have collated or explained the ShiMing. But they did not get full accomplishment. So HuangKan said, "now we should concentrate our efforts to sort out this book."TaiPingYuLan is an important synthetical encylopaedia of the BeiSong Dynasty. For it always quote a full paragraph of source from other books, this book is more useful than former encylopaedias. Acceding to my statistic, TaiPingYuLan quoted more than 630 piece of source from ShiMing, which account for about 2/5 of present ShiMing. I have already compiled all of the source in TaiPingYuLan which is quoted from ShiMing and arranged them according to the order of present ShiMing. In a certain point of view, these source can be look upon a incomplete edition of ShiMing before the BeiSong Dynasty.This thesis has used the FanSong edition of ShiMing, BiYuan' ShiMingShuZheng edition, WuZhiZhong" XiaoXueHuiHan edition, WangXianQian" ShiMingShuZhengBu edition and other editions of ShiMing together with a lot of wordbooks, encylopaedias and phonologic books that have quoted source from ShiMing to collated the source in TaiPingYuLan that was quoted from ShiMing. Furthermore, this thesis has annotated the unintelligible word in the source. The objective of this thesis is to clean up a perfect incomplete edition of ShiMing before BeiSong Dynasty that could be helpful to collate the present editions of ShiMing.
