In China, methods such as CATV have been used for many years for distance education, but the formation of idea and methodology of distance education in a virtual sense is only a thing of recent years. On one hand, many educators are trying to find new teaching methods, and it is found that distance education as a new teaching technique can benefit the traditional method significantly. On the other hand, distance education is the outcome of several new technologies, such as communication, network, and computer multimedia.Many methods can be used to implement distance education, and the purpose of this dissertation is to construct a distance education system for campus teaching using the multimedia technique. The system is consisted of a central node and several terminals. The teaching programs in the central node are transferred to the teaching terminals, while the request of terminals can be feed back to the central node. Thus, the broadcasting of teaching programs can be controlled at both the terminals and the central node, and many functions such as teachings by TV or computer can be carried out. The central node of this distance teaching system is consisted of a smart server controller, which provides the transmission ports, and a program controller, which manages the switch of teaching programs. The terminal node is consisted of a smart terminal controller, TV and CCD camera, which are responsible for the receiving and returning of teaching information respectively. The purpose of the paper is to design a distance teaching system that have multiple and flexible functions, and can be implemented economically. To exert the system capability, and to provide more distance education functions, connections of this campus system to Internet and to satellite communication networks are further studied.Another important work of this dissertation is the construction Local Networks using different kind of micro-computes, and the development DE_MIS (Distance Education Management Information System) system. The purpose of this work is to enhance the level of the sharing of common resources, and the level of administration of traditional and modern distance education. The operating system is Windows NT, and the Client/Server architecture is used for system platform. The end terminal application programs are wrote in Visual Basic, and the database server system is constructed using SQL Server. The administration of this DE_MIS system is simple, and the functions ofthe system are useful.At last, the work of this dissertation is summarized and further discussed. The full aims as follows:The system architecture is reasonable, the design is clear,the system performance is reliable, and the manipulation is simple. To some extent, this system has solved the problems of teaching administration and distance education for campus purpose.
