| This dissertation studies and implements a PCI-to-ISA bridge, which is a key component of the south bridge in the PC system architecture. The function of the PCI-to-ISA bridge is to translate the PCI bus protocol to ISA bus protocol. Such translation makes communication between PCI devices and ISA devices possible.The main research works in this dissertation include as the following.1. Research on PC system architecture and study of PCI local bus specification;2. Definition of PCI-to-ISA bridge architecture and design of its function modules, such as the internal finite state machines, interfaces and configuration registers etc.;3. Design of 8237 DMA controller;4. Implementation and testifying PCI-to-ISA bridge on a FPGA chip. This dissertation has contributed to the research on the PCI local bus andprovides a solution to the application of legacy ISA devices in the new PC system with PCI bus. |
