SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is a signaling protocol for IP telephone, provided by IETF. It is designed for the call control in IP network and the communication with Softswitching. The thesis provides a comprehensive research on the above two applications, and a detailed description of design and partial implementation of call management system in SIP-based IP telephones. The thesis comprises of five chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the conceptions of SIP and IPtel, with a detailed comparison of SIP and H.323 for IPtel, which emphasizes the advantages of SIP. Chapter 2 describes the architecture and design principles of call management system in the SIP-based IPtel, with an in-depth analysis of support for QoS and safety in IPtel. The call management system is composed of two parts: common modules and entities, whose implementation is explained respectively in Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. Besides, Chapter 4 provides the design of a gateway connecting PSTN and SIP-based IP network. Chapter 5 summarizes advantages and disadvantages of SIP and speculates its future development.
