Nowadays the research on how to improve reliability and security of large-scale process system has received great attention. One of the most commonly methods employed to analyze system reliability is Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), whose prerequisite is the process of constructing a fault tree, however it is tough job to carry researches on fault tree construction of complicated system. A research into the methods of fault tree construction has become one of essential braches of FTA researches. And what extent these methods are perfected will directly influence qualitative analysis and quantitive calculation of system reliability. Therefore, development of fault tree as well as its automatically generative methods is of not only practical significance, but also widespread applied value.Based on the investigation of existing methods suitable for automatic construction of control system fault tree, this paper proposes a new method, which could automatically construct fault tree by analyzing the failure model of components. This method defines logical combinations of component-by-component directly from the system flow chart. By searching the component failure model database, fault tree is constructed. In the process of constructing fault tree, this method also presents how components failure model is constructed, how child fault trees are connected, how control loop template is formed as well as the flow chart of the fault tree synthesis. In the latter half of the paper the process of constructing fault tree of a simple control system as well as a complicated one is described so as to demonstrate the effectiveness and technical feasibility of the proposed method.
