With the development of multimedia information technology, some new technologies, such as video phone and video conference, are taken on much interest instead of speech communications. The establishment of H.26x and MPEG video compression standard directs a broad way for the development of multimedia communication industry.H.263 and H.263+ are video standards established by ITU-T for video applications with low bit rate. Besides, Digital Signal Processors(DSP) are used in more and more fields in recent years as a result of developing semiconductor technic and improving computer structure. TMS320C6416 is one of C6000 series high-performance DSP chip, which is produced by Texas Instrument. Compared with special image processing chips.the video processing system constructed with DSP is flexible, and the system updates conveniently.This paper introduces the main contents of Recommendation H.263 and new coding techniques in H.263+. And a video transmission system is implemented in LAN based on H.263/H.263+ core algorithm. In the system, Winsock and multithreading technologies are used. It also discusses the real-time implementation on TMS320C6416 DSP chip of the H.263/H.263+ codec. To speed up the codec precess, the code is optimized according to the charter of TMS320C6416. Meanwhile the algorithm on moving searching is realized. At last, we realize efficiently the real-time processing of H.263/H.263+ codec on TMS320C6416. It may be embedded in multimedia routers, wireless gateways and video communication productions for code-switching, coding and decoding.
