This thesis is aimed at the development of news weeklies appearing in contemporary China (in the middle and late 1990s). Focusing on the reason why contemporary news weeklies haven't got a warm welcome yet after ten years of struggling, the thesis tries to probe into the future development of contemporary news weeklies and to illustrate that Chinese news weeklies, still staying at the growing stage of readers' market, are at a certain distance from the real white-hot competition. The thesis is divided into five chapters.Chapter I ,This chapter is to state the concept of News Weekly and to recollect the history of American news weeklies. It mainly introduces the unique style of American Times which stands for a mature news weekly.Chapter II,After a brief recall of the history of Chinese news weeklies, this chapter first introduces the emergence of China newborn news weeklies in the middle and late 1990s, analyzes the media environment at that moment, and then mainly discuses the reason why they could emerge.Chapter III,Contrasted to any other medium, news weeklies have theirspecial characters in the fields of content framework, topic choice anddevice. So this chapter chiefly presents the professional traits ofcontemporary Chinese news weeklies after their ten yeas of development.Chapter IV,This chapter is to analyze the situation in which Chinesenews weeklies haven't got a warm welcome so far and to point out it is theshortage of target readers that causes such a situation. At the same time,South Weekend, with its low price and deep reports, has occupied themarket that should have belonged to Chinese news weeklies.Chapter V ,To estimate and to look forward to the future development of Chinese news weeklies, this chapter argues the shifts among different angles of view of news weeklies, the possibilities of cooperation between news weeklies and the internet and the market managing of news weeklies. It concludes that Chinese news weeklies are still at a distance from the white-hot competition though they have had achieved to some degree since 2003.
