| Computer network technologies have been developing rapidly during the past decades. In terms of LAN, how to increase transmission rate to gigabits becomes one of the research focuses recently. With the invention of cost competitive plastic fiber a few years ago, the gigabits high-speed LAN over plastic optical fiber becomes to be the trend. In this paper, up-to-date applications of LAN technologies are reviewed firstly. After that, followed with an introduction of OCDMA system, including OCDMA system characteristics and its key technologies. Then, a comparison of WDM, TDM and OCDMA technologies, which are actually the main technologies of optical fiber multiply, is made. It is also pointed out that OCDMA is one of the most suitable multiply technologies for optical LANs. Based on the above discussions, two sets of media access control algorithm models for OCDMA based LAN communications are proposed, whereas limited data codes are dynamically used for larger amount of LAN users. The performances of different algorithm models are simulated by computer programming, and discussed in this paper too. This paper is based on the assumption that different users communicate with same speed. However, it is not the reality since... |
