As a popular international video coding standard, MPEG-4 is widely used in multimedia technology field, and its realization framework emerges quickly. With the strong processing performance and the plenty resources, the new generation DSP -TMS320DM642 digital media processor, promoted by TI corporation, turns to be an ideal platform for mutimedia applications. The thesis will discuss the implementation and optimization of MPEG-4 video encoder based on DM642.The implementation of MPEG-4 video encoder based on DM642 platform is proposed, and puts the emphasis on the optimization methods based on the hardware and instruction characteristics of DM642.Firstly, the theory of video compression, the history of video coding standards and the implementation methods of video encoder are introduced, especially MPEG-4 video coding statard and the technology. Based on the characteristic of DM642 and the practically application requirement, we select MPEG-4 simple profile as our encoder arithmetic.Secondly, the characteristics of DM642, such as the instruction set, the data channels, the memory system, and the pipelining framework, are introduced, and the impacts of these characteristics are analyzed.Thirdly, the porting work for MPEG-4 code is dicussed, including overwriting the code, setting up the developing environment, managing the memory system, and etc.At last, the optimization methods for the MPEG-4 texture coding based on the characteristics of DM642 are proposed. DCT/IDCT is optimized by TI image library; quartization and rescale are optimized by software pipelining, which is implemented by C, linear assembly, and standard assembly. These methods can also be used in the DSP development.
