Instant messaging (IM) is an increasingly popular method for communicating over the Internet IM differs from email mainly in its convenience, rapidness, cheapness, and natural bidirectional alternation. These characters make IM become one of the best settlements to distributed process control and distributed collaborating applications, and therefore attracts more and more attentions. Owing to its derivation from the personal application background of net-chatting, current IM systems have some certain problems in security and reliability that it could hardly satisfy the needs in enterprises scale. Furthermore, numerous instant messaging protocols are in use, but little interoperability between services based on these protocols has been achieved. Nowadays many individuals and workgroups take up with the research of IM model and communicating protocol. In order to facilitate the development of instant messaging services, this paper investigates the technology related to IM. The main work includes:The active database system (aDBS) technology is used to improve the instant and reliability of Instant Messaging (TDM) systems. Basic concepts and functions of aDBS are introduced, the traditional model of IM systems is improved based on this technology, and a new architecture of IM systems is raised in this paper. Active functions the database should own in the new architecture are enumerated, and finally some implement-related problems are analyzed Some functions of IM systems are transferred from logic control layer to the database layer, which is an effective method to improve the process efficiency and guarantee the data consistency. After introducing how IM works, this paper details with the vulnerability in authentiction, which leads to several potential security threats of current IM systems. An ameliorted authentication scheme for IM systems is raised in this paper. This scheme faces P2P file transer in enterprise scale and can be used in fields which need more security. The IBM Workplace was analysized for investigating Rich Client Technology's system architecture and function theory, a Rich Client Technology scheme is designed for IM systems, which can be implemented on Windows platform, using object-oriented programming tools. Finally, a prototype system is designed and implemented, which validated the feasibility of the scheme in some way.
