Free-space optical communication has the advantage of high-speed, large capacity, security and anti-jamming etc. It can greatly satisfy the requirement of real-time transfer of large number of data for the space exploring in future. However, the accurate pointing acquiring and tracking of narrow beamwidth is a large problem for the communication links. The performance of ATP technology greatly impact the quality of optical communication, even the success of communication. The ATP technology is very critical to the optical communication system. Because of the sophisticated environment of the space, all kinds of interference internal and external the satellite always makes the transmited beam jitter randomly, and so the pointing error of the receiver. Due to the increase of pointing error, the performance of communication is degraded..In this paper, the attribute of the pointing error is analysed theoretically. With the knowledge of random process, the pdf of the pointing error is investigated. Assume that the azimuth and elevation tracking process are independent and identically distributed, we derived the radial pointing error pdf model which is Rician distribution. Based on the Rician model, we investigated the influence of pointing error on the performance of communication. With the numerical simulation, the influence of both random pointing error and bias error on the burst error probability and the BER are investigated. Then, given the pointing error and BER, we get the optimize value of divergence angle α, which is very important for the system design.In the view of engineering, we analyse the factors that impact the pointing precision.With the RSS value of the pointing error, we get the allocate error value for each factors reasonably.
