With ceaseless expanding of the Internet and its applications, such as IP telephone, video conference, distributed database and multimedia remote education systems, our life has experienced dramatic changes.IP multicast can serve well the huge need of networking bandwidth. Using IP multicast one sender can transmit the same data to multiple receivers only once. Also it can effectively reduce the burden of the Internet. But it has some disadvantages, especially its scalability and QoS. On the other hand, MPLS can provide certain QoS guarantees, because it is a successful combination of routing mechanism in network layer and label switching mechanism in data link layer. So we will consider the multicast and MPLS as two complementary technologies. This thesis, after reviewing and analyzing multicast and MPLS respectively, aims to implement multicast over MPLS to reduce the bandwidth consumption. We choose the PIM-SM protocol in multicast to work over routing in MPLS. We will analyze how to establish IP multicast tree, the process of MPLS label switching and the working principle of PIM-SM, as well as how to create a MPLS multicast tree. We will realize the two mappings in a SPT by adding a new table and filling the tables more than one time at the branch nodes. We will also put forward a MRP driven arithmetic to create LSPs in a shared tree. In the end, we will implement the multicast routing in MPLS with the NS-2 emulator by a PIM-SM SPT model, and demonstrate the feasibility of our scheme.
