SoC has become the main system implementation technology. NRE risks, time-to-market pressure, and ever-increasing design complexity, all these factors drove the SoC industry divided into three parts: IP provider, design service provider, and chip intergrator. The SoC enters a new eara: platform-based SoC design with various IP integrations. The strictly verified and reliable IP cores are playing an essential and significant role in the SoC design flow. Meanwhile, a series of new design, verification, manufacture methodologies and EDA tools have been emeging or being developed to handle these issues.Bus is used for communicating, transfering data and control information in the electronic system. For the different working circumstances and target applications, bus can be divided into two types: the on-chip bus and the on-board bus. AHB is the mainstream on-chip bus standard, it has high-perfomance, supports pipeline operation, multiple bus masters, burst transfers, split transactions and it is easy for chip test etc. PC Card is one of the most universal hot-plug-play buses in the mobile circumstance. PC Card it includes two interface standards: CardBus and 16-bit PC Card. CardBus has the similar protocol to PCI. It is 33MHz synchronous parallel bus with 133MByte/s peak rate. 16-bit PC Card is the traditionally called PCMCIA interface, it has 26 bit wide address lines, 16 bit wide data lines, and it is an asynchronous bus.Different protocol buses are connected through bridge. By using bridges that from on-chip-bus to on-board-bus, SoC can use various system cards which will increase the system functions greatly. In this thesis, an AHB-PC Card bridge is designed; it enables the AHB-based SoC having the PC Card hot-plug-play ability. During the development process, a series of advanced methodologies and several advanced EDA tools were adopted. Now, this IP core has passed the FPGA test, and successfully delivered. This bridge IP core implementes three datapaths: AHB to CardBus datapath, AHB to 16-bit PC Card datapath, CardBus to AHB datapath. And it provides utilities for hot-plug-play at the hardware level and supports PC Card types adaptively. The bridge driver is provided under Linux operating system. The AHB-PC Card bridge IP core is leading on the follow features: the first AHB-based bridge that supports both the CardBus and 16-bit PC Card with single slot; supports hot-plug-play feature at the hardwire logic level; implements specific low-power strategies to reduce system power consumption. Compared to similar IP cores in the market, this IP core has the best supports for AHB and PC Card bus protocols.
