Digital image devices, such as color display, color scanner, color printer, and etc., are being extensively utilized in industry, life, and scientific research. When people enjoy the benefits brought by digital image devices, they are also puzzled by the distortion during the transformation between different devices. Traditional color management system, represented by the Color Electronic Prepress Systems, accomplishes color management by closed-loop method. But it cannot meet the urgent demand required by modern applications for an open and network color management system. Herewith the International Color Consortium (ICC) was founded in 1993 and the ICC profile format was defined, which intent is to provide an open, regardless of vendors, cross-platform color management system. The structure of ICC profiles was introduced in this thesis as a key technique, and the formats of input, display, and output ICC profiles were analyzed in detail. The scanner color characterization model based on polynomial was set up by measureing ANSI IT8.7/2 standard color target. According to ICC input profile format, the scanners' profiles were created and checked using ANSI IT8.7/2 standard colors. The mean color difference of the two scanners is less than 1.2 â–³E*ab units. For the universlly used CRT displays and LCDs, their color characterization models were built up by three-dimension look-up table (3D-LUT) with interpolation. The display ICC profiles based on 3D-LUT were created in terms of ICC display profile format. The Macbeth Color Checker Chart was adopted to test the accuracies of the ICC profiles for both CRT and LCD. The mean color difference of CRTs' AToBO is less than 1.0 â–³E*ab units, and that of LCDs' is less than 1.5 â–³E*ab units. The mean color difference of CRT and LCD's BToAO is less than 2.0 â–³E*ab units. Then the color transformation between these two types of displays was carried out with the CMM supplied by Photoshop. The mean color difference is less than 2.5 â–³E*ab units for transferring color information from CRT to LCD, and less than 2.0 â–³E*ab units for the situation from LCD to CRT. The printer color characterization model was set up using3D-LUT with interpolation and matching algorithms, based which the printer ICC profiles were created according to the ICC output device profile format. The color reproduction performances of the resulted printer ICC profiles were tested by printing 216 patches and the Macbeth ColorChecker colors. The color difference of 216 patches is less than 2.5 â–³E*ab units, and that of Macbeth ColorChecker colors is less than 3.5 â–³E*ab units. Finally, the main conclusions of this dissertation were summarized, and the perspectives of the future study were also forecasted.
