| Multi-space-time (MST) design is built on the concept of single space-time in traditional video arts (include animation). MST design is the technique that integrates several videos into one. It has some resemblance with montage, but montage is built on time line, MST design assembles several videos into one and shows them in the same time. For instance, we are all familiar with the example -- two persons on the phone, the screen divides into two parts, and we can see both sides of those two persons in the same time although they are in different spaces. This is a most typical and simple MST design, things in different spaces but in the same time is put together on the screen, and each space-time has a shape, always in quadrate. And there are more other manifestations, especially in animation where the space and time are all virtual, which means more possibilities than other video arts. The purpose of this thesis is to find the potential of it.Just like different musical instruments have different timbres but can be put together as a band to play symphony. If using MST design in proper way, we can earn a more fantastic effect. But if not, the audience will be easy to get confused, this makes the artists always very cautious to use MST design in their works. With the technology evolution, Computer\Internet\Video Game appeared in people's life , which also changed their opinion on space-time, there are lots of experiments being done in drama, film, animation, especially after the New Media Art appears, it makes the audience's space-time involved into art works, which gives more possibilities to MST design creating. Study of this thesis lies on the technique and function of MST design, which is helpful for the animation artists to understand MST design theory, cultivate their sense of space-time and art creativity, enrich their approaches in expression and eventually benefits their animation works. |
