In the past twenty years, active contour model, as an important research field in computer vision, attracts the attention of more and more researchers. It is a top-down processing with prior knowledge, which is different from Mart's computational vision. It provides a theoretically uniform framework to a series of problems, such as contour extraction, stereo matching, object detecting and tracking. And this model also has been successfully applied to image segmentation, medical image processing, human-computer interaction and many other research and practical field. But the model still has some disadvantage, so it is necessary to study it.This paper illuminates the fundaments of active contour model, researches on parameterized active contour model and geodesic active contour model. Aims at the original Snake model can't handle topological changes and represent clear geometric quantities in object detection and segmentation, a novel approach for object detection and segmenting was presented. Based on geodesic active contour model, the new approach, which adopts level set function to express the model curve evolution equation, to analog the dynamic curve evolves in the direction of energy reduces mostly. The novel model is applied to object detection and segmentation experiments with some synthetic gray pictures. The results, which are continuous and stable, show that the proposed new approach obtains very good effect and is much more powerful than other traditional approaches, since the model is able to handle topological changes and represent clear geometric quantities of the dynamic curve, while the original Snake model doesn't have these properties.
