This thesis describes the research of the routing protocol in the mobile ADHOC networks based on the dynamic source routing protocol(DSR), especially for the implementation in the context of Linux based handsets and optimizations for service differentiation and the real-time multimedia applications. The major effort of the thesis focuses on the extension and improvement schema of the protocol implementation specialized for typical applications of the Nokia N770/N800 serials multimedia handsets. With the enhanced schema, the recently standardized flow state extension is introduced and the Linux kernel is modified to differentiate services with hints from the application level in order to apply different route maintenance policies, while reducing the routing maintenance overheads and optimizing the processing performance as well. Based on the new solution which enables quickly differentiated service type of each PDU of the IP layer in the Linux kernel space, one alternative packet retransmission mechanism is applied to the real-time application services, while the original hop-by-hop acknowledgement per-packet schema is kept for the connection-oriented services which emphasize more on the transmission reliability. Both of the route maintenance and retransmission schemas are integrated on the end-to-end service differentiation with flow state. Finally the ADHOC routing protocol stack as a loadable module is implemented in the IP layer of the kernel space of the handsets. Basic performance verifications and data statistics are given as well, with several typical application scenarios.
