Nowadays, tourism has become one of the most important pillars in the tertiary industry of China, which has a huge influence on the development of China's society and economy. In order to manage information of tourist resources, to make further development of tourist spot based on such information, and to provide tourists with data services relevant to various spots, local governments of different tourist spots have deployed Geographic Information System, known as GIS, to do the job. However, traditional GIS only runs smoothly on two dimensional spatial data, and it can not realize the 3D visualization of a tourist spot while managing the information of its tourist resources, which will prevent people from gaining a direct and real impression of the overall scenery of a tourist spot. Therefore, how to use the knowledge of 3D visualization and that of the characteristics of the tourist industry to construct 3D virtual tourist spot based on techniques of traditional GIS and Virtual Reality has become an important research trend. This paper will have a deep study on such topic. First, collection and processing of tourist spot information will be researched. A method called Picture Positioning will be utilized to categorize pictures taken on the scene. At the same time, efforts will be put to discuss the importance of historic information collection both in the field and from relevant documents. Then, with all the scenes in a tourist spot, there is a need to distinguish the natural landscape with the human landscape, and to model these landscapes respectively. After that, emphasis will be greatly put on the 3D presentation of modeled data and attribute data. The former will include natural landscape data, stratigraphic data and human landscape data, while the latter takes information of cultural landscape with non-physical forms. All these data will occupy huge amount of disk space and lay a burden which the calculation capacity of a computer can not take. Therefore, efforts should be made on two aspects. On one hand, data volume collected at the phase of data collection should be optimized. In order to do this, selection of the photographic equipment used on the scene and data source like topographic maps and remote sensing images with different resolutions should be researched. On the other hand, triangle network optimization techniques like edge collapse, triangle collapse, cell collapse and vertex removal should be used to optimize the 3D virtual tourist spot, and algorithms like back-face culling and clipping should also be used to improve its rendering efficiency.
